Pool shell

The structural basin of the pool — reinforced concrete, sprayed gunite, factory fiberglass or panel construction — that carries water and ground pressure.

Everything visible (finish, coping, deck) is applied over the shell; a sound, waterproof shell is the one thing you can't economize on.
