What each one physically is

The solar blanket is a sheet of UV-stabilized bubble foil, cut to the exact shape of the pool — straight or curved makes no difference — that floats loose on the surface and gets taken off and put back by hand or via a roller station at the poolside.

The slatted cover is built from rigid, interlocking PVC or polycarbonate slats that form a solid deck and roll out of a pit or bench on side tracks at the push of a button — effectively a second, movable floor for the pool.

Why covering matters before either choice

Both exist to solve the same core problem: an uncovered pool loses the vast majority of its heat to evaporation overnight, and covering it cuts that heating energy by roughly 50–70%. The slatted cover wants straight, parallel walls — it's built for rectangles, rounded rectangles and similar shapes, and the pit that houses its rolled-up slats has to be designed into the pool's structure from the start. Retrofitting one into a finished pool is a major, expensive intervention. If a slatted cover is even a maybe, put it on the plan before the shell is poured, not after.

Safety, and where the two genuinely differ

A bare solar blanket has no safety value at all: it floats, it doesn't bear weight, and a child or pet stepping onto it slips straight underneath. It should never be treated as a barrier, fenced or not.

A slatted cover can be different: some models are certified walk-on rated and genuinely bear a person's or a dog's weight, acting as a real barrier when closed. Not all are — check the certification before assuming a cover you're buying does more than insulate. Either way, small children in the house still call for a dedicated certified safety cover or fencing, not an assumption based on whichever heat-saving cover happens to be on the water.

Cost and the choose-one-or-the-other call

Upfront and over its life, the gap is real: a solar blanket and a simple roller are a modest line item, replaced every three to five seasons as the foil wears out under UV; a slatted cover is a serious purchase, closer to a major pool accessory than a consumable — but it's built to last a decade or more without replacement.

Choose the slatted cover if the budget stretches to it and the pool is a rectangle-family shape — it's simply the cover that gets used without fail, and it adds real resale value as a piece of the pool's architecture. Choose the solar blanket, paired with a roller station you'll actually use, if the budget is tighter, the pool is a free-form shape a slatted cover couldn't fit anyway, or the shell is already built and a cover pit was never designed in. Many pools start with a blanket and add a slatted cover at the next build; almost none go the other way.
