Straight vs Roman steps

Rectangular treads or concentric arcs: how the two classic staircases compare in use, looks and cost.

Once you've settled on built-in steps over a ladder, a second, smaller decision follows: what shape should they be? A straight staircase is rectangular treads stacked like a shortened version of the ones in your house, spanning as much of the pool's end as you like. Roman steps are concentric semicircles that flow out of the wall in a curve, widening as they descend to the floor. Both get you into the water the same gentle way, tread by tread — the difference is entirely in how they look, what they cost, and which pool they belong on.

Nothing here touches swimming: neither shape changes the depth, the plant room or the water chemistry, and both can be built wide enough to double as seating. What changes is the formwork, the floor area they take at a given width, and the character they give the end of the pool. If your pool is already a rectangle or an L-shape, this is mostly a style call. If it's a Roman or oval pool, the curve is close to the default.

Two geometries, one job

A straight staircase is a stack of rectangular boxes, each one narrower than the last as it climbs out of the water — comfortable pool treads run 30–35 cm deep with an 18–25 cm rise between them, deeper and gentler than the roughly 28 cm treads on a house stair, because you move slower with water around your legs. Set it anywhere along a wall, from a tight 1 m corner unit to the full width of the pool's end.

Roman steps are the same idea bent into an arc. Each tread is a ring, concentric with the one above it, and the rings widen as they go down — the top ring hugs the wall, the bottom ring, at the pool floor, is a full semicircle. Because a true semicircle bulges out from its straight edge by exactly half its own width, a 3 m-wide Roman entry projects about 1.5 m into the pool — geometry decides the reach, not a design choice.

Look: architecture versus theatre

Straight steps read as construction: clean lines, sharp corners, the same language as a rectangular pool or a modern house. They disappear into the design rather than announcing themselves, which is exactly the point on a minimal, architectural build.

Roman steps read as a gesture. The curve flows out of the wall like water finding its own shape, and it photographs beautifully lit from below at dusk. It is a classical device — borrowed from actual Roman baths — so it sits naturally on a Roman or oval pool and adds a formal note to a plain rectangle when you want one accent of curve without redesigning the whole shape.

Seating: a bench versus a perch

A straight staircase built full-width is, in effect, a submerged bench: every tread is a flat, even surface, and the top one or two sit under 20–25 cm of water — shallow enough to perch on with a drink, deep enough to cool your feet. It is the better seat of the two, simply because it is flat and continuous.

A Roman staircase seats people too, just less efficiently: the rings curve, so only the outer arc gives a comfortable, level perch, and the usable seating shrinks as the rings narrow toward the wall. What it gives up in bench space it makes up in presence — people remember sitting on the curve of a Roman stair in a way they don't remember a straight one.

Construction: straight formwork versus curved

A straight staircase in a concrete pool is built from flat panels — the simplest formwork there is, and any competent crew builds one without fuss. In a liner pool it is a prefabricated block or a masonry base the liner is welded over, again with no special skill required.

A Roman staircase needs curved formwork or hand-shaped blockwork for every ring, and the curve has to be smooth and consistent or it reads as sloppy rather than elegant — this is a detail worth checking on-site, not just on the drawing. Tiling adds its own premium: mosaic on small-format sheets wraps the rings cleanly, while large-format tile has to be cut piece by piece to follow the arc.

Which pools each one belongs on

Straight steps belong on rectangles, rounded rectangles, Grecians and L-shapes — anywhere the pool's own language is straight lines and right angles. They are also the practical choice whenever the entry needs to reach the full width of a narrow pool, since a rectangular tread wastes no width on curvature.

Roman steps belong on Roman and oval pools, where the wall is already curved and the stair continues a shape the pool has already committed to. They also work as a single soft accent on an otherwise straight rectangle — set them at one end only, and leave the rest of the pool crisp. Put both options into the designer on your actual pool shape and see which one the end of the pool wants.

Cost: what the curve adds

Steps of either kind are a moderate line on the quote — formwork, rebar and finish on top of the shell — and the honest cost driver is width and tread count, not the shape itself. A wide, full-length staircase costs more than a narrow corner unit whichever geometry it is.

Layered on top of that, curved formwork carries its own premium over straight — typically a low double-digit percentage of the steps line, more if the tiling is large-format rather than mosaic. It's a real number, but a small one next to the shell and equipment budgets; nobody chooses straight steps to save money on a pool that otherwise wants a curve.

Choose straight if… choose Roman if…

Choose straight steps if the pool is a rectangle, rounded rectangle, Grecian or L-shape, if you want the widest, flattest seat for the money, or if the budget is genuinely tight and every euro should go to the shell and equipment first.

Choose Roman steps if the pool is Roman, oval, or otherwise curved already, if you want one memorable, photogenic detail at an end of an otherwise plain pool, or if the staircase itself is meant to be the feature people talk about, rather than just the way in.
