Pool steps, ladders and entries

Nobody thinks about the entry until it's wrong. Tread sizes, widths and placement decide whether the pool is comfortable every single day.

The most-used part of the pool

Every swim starts and ends at the entry. It is also where people sit with a drink, where a two-year-old stands to watch everyone else, and where a visiting grandparent decides in four seconds whether this pool is for them. For something used that heavily it gets remarkably little thought — usually drawn last, onto a plan that already fixed the shape, the cover and the terrace.

There are four ways in: built-in steps, straight or Roman; corner steps; a stainless ladder; and a beach entry. They differ in one thing before all others — how much pool they eat. A staircase is water you cannot swim in, and you buy it with swim length. A ladder costs nothing but comfort. The rest of this is how to price that trade honestly.

One more thing sets the entry apart: it is cast with the shell. Almost everything else can be changed later; steps cannot, not without breaking concrete.

The dimensions that make steps comfortable

Pool treads are deeper than house stairs — 30 to 35 cm — because in water you move slowly and put the whole foot down. Rises are 18 to 25 cm; at 30 cm a staircase turns into a climb. Width matters more than either: 1.2 m is comfortable, 1.5 m is somewhere to sit, and on a 60 cm staircase two people meeting have a genuine problem.

The count is arithmetic. Shallow depth divided by rise: a 1.2 m shallow end with 24 cm rises wants five treads, the last being the pool floor. Reach follows — tread × count, about 1.4 m for four 35 cm treads. Subtract it from the swim length before you settle the pool's size, not after. In the designer you can set the tread depth and the step count and watch the staircase reach into your own pool.

One detail almost everybody misses: the step down from the deck. In a skimmer pool the water stands about 15 cm below the coping, so the top tread belongs one rise below the coping, not below the water. Get it wrong and the first step of every swim is a lurch.

Full-width steps: entry, bench and kids' zone

Running the staircase across the whole end wall turns the entry into part of the pool rather than a way into it. Adults sit on the second tread with water at the waist. Small children stand where they can see everyone. On the hottest afternoon of the year the top tread is the most occupied square metre in the garden.

It costs surface, and the number is worth knowing. A full-width staircase in an 8 × 4 m pool reaching 1.4 m in takes about 5.5 m² — roughly a sixth of the water, and the shallow, warm, useful sixth. In a 12 m pool it disappears; in a 6 m pool it is most of the shallow end. That one figure decides whether full-width steps are generous or greedy.

If you want the seat without the loss, take the staircase to half the width and run a 60 cm bench along the adjoining wall — the same sitting room for a fraction of the water.

A staircase is not a way in — it is the most-used seat in the garden, and it deserves to be designed like one.

Roman steps, corner steps and the rest

Roman steps flow out of the end wall in concentric arcs: classical, slightly theatrical, and on a Roman or oval pool the detail people remember. They cost more for an honest reason: curved formwork is cut and braced by hand, and mosaic is the only tile format that wraps an arc without cutting. They also reach further in, typically 1.6–2 m.

Corner steps are the space-saving opposite: a quarter-round or triangular staircase tucked into one corner, leaving the lane clear wall to wall. They are the cheapest built-in entry and the least comfortable to sit on. In a pool 3 to 3.5 m wide, where a full-width staircase would swallow the swim, they are usually right.

Ladders and grab rails

A stainless ladder takes zero water. That is the entire argument, and in a lap pool or anything under about 6 m it usually wins. Ask for AISI 316 stainless if your water is salt-chlorinated or run hard; cheaper 304 freckles with rust spots within a couple of seasons. Powder-coated black and white versions sit better against dark coping, but coatings scuff where feet land.

The anchors decide everything else. Ladder sockets go into the deck slab while it is poured; retrofitting them means cutting the coping and the concrete beneath. Put them on the plan: treads about 30 cm apart, rails far enough off the wall that your heels clear it, and the grip 90 cm above the coping, so there is something to hold while standing.

Even with a beautiful staircase at the shallow end, a grab rail at the deep end earns its keep. After a proper swim, nobody wants to cross the pool to get out.

Beach entries, and the ledge that stands in for one

A true beach entry — the floor rising to meet the deck, no step anywhere — is the loveliest way into a pool and the most expensive water you will never swim in. The slope has to be walkable: 1:8 to 1:12. At 1:10, reaching 1.2 m of depth takes 12 m of ramp before the swimming starts. In a large pool it is wonderful; in a normal garden it is arithmetic that does not work.

The compromise almost everyone ends up with is a tanning ledge: a flat shelf under 10–20 cm of water, one step down from the deck, with the staircase proper beyond it. It gives the warm, sit-in-it, toddler-safe zone people actually want from a beach entry, for a couple of square metres instead of twelve.

Where the entry goes

Three rules cover most gardens. Put the entry at the shallow end, nearest the terrace and the door people come out of — that is the path they walk whether you planned it or not. Keep it out of the swim lane: a staircase halfway along a wall ruins every turn. And favour the side the afternoon sun reaches, because shallow water over a step warms first, and that is where people sit.

Then check the cover before anything is drawn. An automatic slatted cover floats on the water and travels the full width; over a top tread sitting 20 cm below the surface, the slats can ground as soon as the level drops. A Roman end beyond the cover's travel, or corner steps outside it, both solve this on the drawing. After the concrete, nothing solves it cheaply.

The details people forget

Contrast the nosing. A staircase finished in one colour vanishes from above through moving water at dusk, which is exactly when people misjudge it. A tile edge one shade darker draws every tread, and costs nothing while the tiler is there anyway. Non-slip surfaces on every tread belong in the same sentence.

Set the handrail slightly off the staircase's centre line so it helps without blocking, in a socket cast at the same time as the ladder's. Add one light that grazes along the steps rather than shining at them from the opposite wall — night swimming lives or dies on that detail. And be clear with yourself: steps are also the easiest way in for a child who should not be in the pool, so the barrier, alarm or safety cover is a separate decision, in some countries a legal one.

Cost runs in a predictable order, cheapest first: ladder, corner steps, straight steps, full-width steps, Roman steps, beach entry. The gap between the ends is wide enough to change the size of pool you can afford — which is why the entry belongs in the first conversation, not the last.

Before the steps are cast

  • Put the entry at the shallow end, nearest the terrace and the door.
  • Ask for 30–35 cm treads and rises no steeper than 25 cm.
  • Make the staircase at least 1.2 m wide — 1.5 m if anyone will sit on it.
  • Work out the reach (tread × count) and subtract it from your swim length.
  • Decide the cover before the steps are drawn; slats and shallow treads argue.
  • Set the ladder and handrail sockets while the deck slab is still being poured.
  • Specify non-slip treads and a nosing you can see through moving water.
  • Add one light that shows the steps at night without shining into your eyes.

What goes wrong in practice

  1. House-stair dimensions underwater

    A 25 cm tread with a 30 cm rise feels normal dry and treacherous wet, especially on the way out with wet feet. Insist on 30–35 cm treads; the extra concrete is trivial next to the discomfort of getting it wrong.

  2. The 60 cm staircase

    Narrow steps cannot be sat on, cannot be passed on and are the first thing anyone with a knee complains about. Widening the formwork while it is up costs almost nothing; adding width later costs a rebuild.

  3. Steps parked in the swim lane

    In a 6–7 m pool, a full-width staircase turns a real swim into three strokes and a turn. Move it to a corner, or fit a ladder and put the saved metres back into the water.

  4. Forgotten anchors

    Ladder and handrail sockets have to be cast into the deck. Retrofitting means lifting coping stones and core-drilling concrete, and the repair is always visible. Mark the positions on the plan before the pour.

  5. Steps that fight the cover

    An automatic cover travels the whole surface, and slats ground on a top tread that sits too close to the water line. Decide cover and entry together — this is the one conflict that cannot be fixed after the concrete.

No. Steps make the pool easy to get out of and equally easy to get into. Safety comes from a compliant barrier, alarm or safety cover — required by law in some countries — plus an adult who is watching.
