Light the water, not the eyes
There is one rule that matters more than all the others: the fixtures must face away from where you will be standing. In practice that means the near long wall — the one closest to the house and the terrace — with the light shining across the pool and away from you. You then see a body of glowing water. Put the lights on the far wall instead and every one of them points at your face; you see hard points of glare and a black pool behind them.
This is easy to get wrong because a plan viewed from above looks symmetrical. It is not. Before anyone marks the walls, sit in the chair you will actually sit in on a summer evening and decide from there which wall is the near one. That single decision does more for the result than the brand of fixture.
It is also why the designer's default layout puts the lights on one long side, aimed away from the viewer. If your terrace is at one end rather than along a side, move them to the end wall for the same reason.
What water does to light
Water is both a lens and a diffuser. A fixture about 50 cm below the waterline throws a cone that fills the body of the water and lights it from inside. Mount it higher and the beam skims the surface, so you get glitter and glare instead of glow. Mount it much deeper and more of the light is absorbed before it does any work, and the fixture gets harder to service.
Fifty centimetres is the compromise almost everyone lands on: below the wave zone, above the layer where fine sediment drifts, and reachable when a lamp needs changing. Keep it consistent — fixtures at different heights read as a mistake even when nobody can say why.
The interior finish then multiplies or eats the result. A pale finish — white, sand, light grey — bounces light around and makes one fixture do the work of two. A dark grey or black finish swallows it, so the same pool needs more lights, or brighter ones, and will still read as a dark mirror at night. That is often exactly the effect you wanted, but decide it on purpose rather than discovering it in August.
How many, and which layout
One good LED per 15–20 m² of water surface is plenty. An 8 × 4 m pool is 32 m², so two fixtures, three if the finish is dark or the pool has a busy shape. Space them 2–3 m apart and keep each at least a metre clear of a corner, where the light just bounces back at itself.
There are four layouts worth knowing. One side is the default for a family rectangle. Both sides staggered suits long pools — a 12 m lap pool lit from one side only has a dark middle, and staggering avoids two beams meeting head-on. The deep end alone is the quiet, moody option, good when the pool is seen from a distance. All around belongs to free-form and architectural pools where there is no single viewing point.
One more constraint beats all of them: nothing must sit behind the steps, under the tanning ledge, behind a bench or behind the cover housing. A fixture blocked by structure lights concrete. Draw the accessories first, the lights second — in that order, every time.
Almost every disappointing pool at night is over-lit, not under-lit.
Pick one white and live with it
Warm white, roughly 2700–3000 K, flatters stone, travertine, timber and planting. It makes evening water look inviting rather than sterile, and it matches the warm light spilling out of the house. If your coping is a natural stone or your garden is planted, this is almost always the right answer.
Cool white, 5000 K and up, reads crisp and modern and suits white or grey tile and strict architecture. Be careful in a blue-lined pool: the water already adds blue, and cool white on top of it can tip into a slightly clinical cyan that looks better in photos than in the garden. Neutral white around 4000 K is the safe middle if you cannot decide.
Colour is the feature everyone demos and few people use. In practice most owners settle on one white within the first season and bring out colour for a birthday or New Year. So choose fixtures where white is the primary mode and colour the extra — cheap RGB units make white by mixing red, green and blue, and that white tends to look dingy or faintly purple next to a proper white LED.

Too much light is the usual failure
Almost every disappointing pool at night is over-lit. At full power the water looks like a hotel pool: bright, flat and slightly institutional. At forty or fifty per cent the same fixtures give you a garden — depth, soft edges, a surface that still reflects the trees.
So buy dimmable fixtures with a driver or transformer that can actually dim them, and put the pool on its own circuit, separate from the terrace and the path lights. The scene you want most evenings is pool low, path lights lower, one or two uplights in the planting. The scene you want on the night of the party is everything up. You cannot get either if it is all one switch.
The wiring you cannot redo later
Pool lights are low voltage, usually 12 V, fed from a transformer in the plant room, and each fixture is wired through its own conduit back to a junction so that a cable can be pulled and replaced without opening the shell. That conduit is the part you cannot add afterwards. Cutting a finished pool for a new light means chasing concrete, repairing the interior finish and an empty pool for a week.
So run conduits for every light you might ever want, and cap the spares. The same goes for a lit feature wall, lit steps or a bubbler you have not decided on. In a trench that is already open, a spare conduit costs almost nothing against the rest of the build; afterwards it is one of the more expensive small jobs you can order.
Check serviceability too. In a concrete pool the fixtures sit in niches; in a liner pool they are flat units clamped through the membrane. Either way, ask how a lamp gets changed and whether the water has to come down to do it. Modern LEDs last for years, but they do not last for ever.
Light the garden, not just the pool
A pool lit on its own is a bright rectangle floating in a black void, and it looks lonely. Give it something to reflect: a low graze of light on the wall or hedge behind it, one uplight in a tree, the coping edge picked out. The water then holds a picture instead of just glowing.
The counter-rule is to keep everything on your side dim, low and shielded — below eye level, never aimed back across the pool. And never floodlight the water from a lamp on the house wall: the surface acts as a mirror, you get a sheet of reflected glare, and the underwater lighting you paid for disappears completely.

Test it before you buy it
In the designer, switch your pool to night mode and run through the premade layouts — one side, both sides staggered, deep end, all around — with warm, cool and coloured light, and with your actual interior finish. It takes five minutes and shows you the thing the catalogue photos never do: what your pool looks like, not somebody else's.
Then do the real-world version. On a dark evening, put a waterproof torch in a clear sealed bag, hold it 50 cm down against the wall where a fixture would go, and look from the terrace. You will know immediately whether that wall is the near one or the far one — which is the only question that really matters.

- Sit in your usual evening chair and decide which wall the lights must face away from.
- Plan one fixture per 15–20 m² of surface, 50 cm below the waterline.
- Keep fixtures 2–3 m apart and a metre clear of corners, steps, benches and the ledge.

What goes wrong in practice
Lights pointing at the house
The most common mistake and the most annoying: every evening you get hard glare instead of glowing water. Mount on the wall nearest the terrace, shining away from it.
One powerful fixture instead of three modest ones
A single bright light gives a hotspot in the middle and two dark ends. Several smaller fixtures make the whole body of water glow, and one failing lamp does not black out the pool.
A fixture behind the steps or under the ledge
The structure blocks it and you have lit a concrete wall from ten centimetres away. Fix the accessory positions before the light positions, not after.
Buying for colour, living with white
Cheap RGB units mix a poor white, and white is what you use almost every night. Judge a fixture on its white first and treat colour as the bonus.
No spare conduit
During the build an extra conduit is the cheapest thing on site. Afterwards, adding a light means cutting the shell, repairing the finish and an empty pool for a week.
