Start from what you'll actually do in it
Pools are bought for imagined summers and used on real Tuesdays, so start from the honest use case. Cooling off and floating needs surprisingly little water — 4 × 2.5 m does it. Family play wants standing room and a shallow end, which starts around 6 × 3 m. Actual swimming — strokes, not bobbing — wants at least 8 m of clear water, and training swims want 12 m or more.
Then count heads rather than square metres. A useful rule of thumb is about 4 m² of water per person actually in the pool at the same time. Four people is 16 m², which is a 6 × 3. Eight people at a birthday is 32 m², which is an 8 × 4. If your honest peak is two adults swimming and one child playing, you do not need the pool you are picturing.
Before anything is drawn, mark the candidate footprint on your lawn with string and pegs and live with it for a week. Walk around it in the dark. Put the garden table where the table goes. Mow around it. Most people discover that their imagined 10 × 5 m pool eats the entire usable garden, and that 7 × 3.5 m leaves room to live.
The four size classes and what each one buys
Sizes cluster into four honest classes. A plunge pool is anything up to about 13 m² of water: 4 × 2.5 m, 5 × 2.5 m, a 4 m circle. It is for sitting in, cooling down and talking. One uniform depth around 1.3 m suits it, and it heats so cheaply that it is genuinely usable from April.
A compact pool runs roughly 15–24 m² — 6 × 3, 7 × 3.5. Children can play and an adult can swim a short length. A family pool is 24–50 m² — 8 × 4, 9 × 4, 10 × 5 — the class that does everything reasonably well, and the reason 8 × 4 m is the most-built size in Europe. Above 50 m² you are in estate territory: 12 × 6 is 72 m², a serious piece of infrastructure with bills to match.
The lap pool is a shape more than a class: 12–20 m long, 3–4 m wide, one depth throughout, all length and no waste. It fits down the side of a garden where a family pool never would, and per square metre of water it buys more swimming than any other layout.
The footprint is bigger than the water
The water is only part of the story. Add coping — a 30–40 cm ring of stone all round — then walk-around space, at least 60 cm on the tight sides and a comfortable 1 m, and somewhere to put loungers, which takes 2 m of depth on at least one side. An 8 × 4 m pool realistically claims a zone of about 11 × 7 m.
Then check what is not negotiable. Most municipalities require a setback from property lines, often in the region of 1–3 m. Trees within a few metres will drop leaves into the water and push roots toward the shell. The plant room wants to be within roughly 10 m of the pool, because every metre of pipe is friction the pump pays for, every hour it runs.
And check access. A mini excavator needs about 1.5 m of clear gate; a full-size machine with a truck for the spoil wants 3 m. If the only way into the back garden is through the house, the excavation becomes a hand-dig or a crane hire — and that single fact often costs more than the difference between two pool sizes.
The pool people regret is almost never the one that was too small — it is the one that turned out too expensive to keep warm.
Width decides whether it swims; length decides how it feels
Width is the dimension people cut first and regret most. One person swimming needs about 2.5 m of clear width — any less and a stroke finds the wall. Two adults side by side, or one swimmer and one child crossing, want 3.5–4 m. Below 2.5 m a pool is a place to be in water, not a place to swim.
Length sets the rhythm. At 8 m an adult takes five or six strokes and turns: that is swimming, but busy. At 10–12 m the turns stop dominating. Above 12 m it starts to feel like a pool rather than a tank. If lengths matter to somebody in the house, buy length before width — a 10 × 3.5 m swims better than an 8 × 4.5 m and holds less water to heat.

Every running cost scales, and they scale differently
Two numbers drive the bills. Surface area drives heat loss, because most of a pool's heat leaves by evaporation from the top. Volume drives chemical use, filtration and the cost of warming the water in the first place. Going from 6 × 3 to 8 × 4 takes the surface from 18 to 32 m² and the water from roughly 25 to 48 m³ — near enough a doubling of both.
In practice that means a bigger heat pump (size it at roughly 0.35 kW per cubic metre, so about 9 kW for an 8 × 4), a bigger cover, more litres of everything and a longer filtration run each day. It also means a longer fill: a garden tap delivers around 1.5 m³ an hour, so 48 m³ is more than a day of running water, and on a metered supply that is a real bill.
None of this argues for a tiny pool. It argues for matching the size to the season you want. The trap is not the build cost, it is the annual one: a pool you can afford to heat gets swum in from May to September, and a pool you cannot gets covered up and apologised for. Decide what you are willing to spend each year first, and let that set a ceiling on square metres.
What the builder is actually pricing
Reading a quote makes the size conversation much easier. Excavation is priced by volume and by ground: clay, rock, a high water table or a tight access route all move it. The shell is priced mostly by perimeter and wall area rather than water surface, which is why a long thin pool is not automatically cheap just because it is narrow.
The finishes follow perimeter too — coping, waterline tile and the cover rail are all metres, not square metres. Filtration and heating follow volume. And the cover, often the most expensive single item after the shell, follows the exact rectangle it has to span, which is why standard sizes quote better than odd ones.
Ask for the same design quoted at two sizes, say 7 × 3.5 and 8 × 4. The gap between them is the honest price of that extra metre. On the build it is usually smaller than people fear; on the yearly bills it is usually larger than they expect.
Try three sizes before you commit
The order that works is: honest use case, then the garden zone, then the running budget, then the pool. Most people go backwards — they start with a picture and end up fitting the garden around a number from a brochure.
Draw the three candidates in the designer — say a 6 × 3, an 8 × 4 and a 10 × 4 — set your real deck widths, and watch the water volume change as you go. It is free, and three numbers side by side settle the argument faster than any advice. Then take the string back out and check the winner against the lawn one more time.
Before you fix the size
- Write down the honest use: cooling off, family play, or real swimming.
- Count the peak number of people in the water and allow about 4 m² each.
- Peg the outline on the lawn and live with it for a week.
- Add coping, a walk-around and lounger space, then check the zone still fits.
- Keep at least 2.5 m of clear width if anyone will swim strokes.
- Check setbacks, trees, and how an excavator gets into the garden.
- Set a yearly running budget before you set the square metres.
- Get the same design quoted at two sizes and compare the gap.
What goes wrong in practice
Sizing for the party, not for the Tuesday
The pool gets built for twelve guests in August and heated for two swimmers in May. Size it for the use you will have every week and accept that the party is a little crowded — that is what parties are.
Forgetting the deck
A 10 × 5 pool in a 12 × 8 garden leaves a 1 m strip of paving and nowhere to sit. The afternoon actually happens on the deck, so take the deck out of the garden before you size the water.
Trading width away on paper
Losing 50 cm of width sounds harmless and ruins the swim. Below 2.5 m arms find walls. If something has to go, take it off the length instead.
Ignoring access
A pool that cannot be dug is a pool that gets hand-dug or craned. Measure the gate, the side passage and the overhead cables before you fall in love with a size.
Buying a size you cannot heat
The bill arrives every year and the pool never shrinks. If the heating budget covers 30 m², build 30 m² and spend the difference on a good cover — it will pay you back every season.
