How deep should a pool be?

Depth decides who can use the pool, what it costs and whether anyone may ever dive. Most pools need less of it than people think.

Depth is a use decision, not a taste one

Nobody looks at a pool and sees its depth — they see the outline and the water. But depth decides who can use the pool, what it costs to keep warm, and whether anybody may safely jump in. It is also fixed the day the floor is poured. So take it from the people who will swim, not from a photograph.

Start with standing height. A six-year-old stands comfortably in 0.9–1.0 m. An adult stands chest-deep at about 1.2–1.4 m. From roughly 1.6 m an adult can swim without brushing the floor and tread water properly. Those three numbers cover almost every private pool ever built.

Then ask who will be in the water most. If the answer is small children, you want plenty of water at 0.9–1.2 m and very little beyond it. If it is two adults swimming lengths, you want one depth everywhere. Only if somebody insists on diving does anything past 1.8 m enter the conversation at all.

The standard: 1.2 m shallow, 1.8 m deep

The classic family pairing is a 1.2 m shallow end sloping to a 1.8 m deep end. At 1.2 m children stand and adults wade comfortably; at 1.8 m adults swim without touching and can tread water. It is the default for a good reason — it serves two ages of swimmer in one basin.

The slope between them matters as much as the two numbers. Keep the shallow floor flat for the first third of the pool, run a gentle, steady slope through the middle third, and leave the deep zone flat at the far end. Anything steeper than about 1:3 feels like a step underfoot, and children find it the hard way, by sliding down it.

Orientation matters too. Put the shallow end where people get in — normally nearest the terrace, where the steps are — and the deep end at the far wall. That puts the most-used water closest to the house and the deepest water furthest from anyone wandering in.

Uniform depth is underrated

Lap pools, plunge pools and a growing number of family pools now use one depth throughout, typically 1.35 m. It is enough to swim, shallow enough for most adults to stand, and it simplifies the whole build: one floor level, a flat excavation, no transition to form, and less water to heat than the same pool with a deep end.

It is also safer in the way that actually matters. There is no invisible line where the floor drops away, which is exactly what a non-swimming child discovers by walking. A robot cleaner covers a flat floor far more reliably than a sloped one, and a flat floor is easier to brush and easier to see into.

The people who lose out are teenagers who want to jump and adults who like deep water to hang in. If nobody in the house cares about either, a uniform 1.35–1.4 m pool is cheaper to build, cheaper to run and easier to live with — and you will not miss the metre you did not dig.

Almost nobody regrets a pool that is 1.4 m deep everywhere; plenty of people regret paying every summer to heat a deep end nobody swims in.

Depth by pool type, and the shelf that changes the sum

Useful defaults, sorted by what the pool is for. A plunge pool: one depth of about 1.3 m — you sit and stand in it rather than swim. A compact pool around 6 × 3: 1.2 m to 1.6 m, because a full 1.8 m in a small basin eats a disproportionate share of the volume. An 8 × 4 family pool: the classic 1.2 to 1.8 m. A large pool of 50 m² or more: 1.2 to 2.0 m, where the extra depth is a small share of a big volume.

A lap pool: uniform 1.35–1.4 m, essentially always. Deep water adds nothing to lap swimming, and a constant depth makes turns predictable and the water cheaper to heat.

Then there is the shelf that changes the whole calculation. A tanning ledge — a flat shelf 10–40 cm below the surface, usually about 15 cm, running two metres into the pool — gives toddlers a genuinely safe place to be, gives adults somewhere to sit in water, and costs almost no volume. In a family pool it is usually worth more than any change to the deep end.

Diving changes everything

Head-first diving from the edge needs at least 2.4 m of water, and not in a single spot: the deep zone has to be big enough that a body travelling forward stays in deep water. Under a springboard, more again, plus width and a long clear approach. That is an engineering envelope, not a preference.

The extra metre of depth is expensive in every direction at once — more excavation, more spoil to cart away, taller walls with more steel, several more cubic metres of water to heat and treat, and possibly shoring or a groundwater problem you did not have at 1.8 m. For a feature used a handful of times each summer, it is the worst value in the whole build.

Most private pools are better designed, and clearly signed, as no-diving pools with a 1.8–2.0 m deep end. Feet-first jumping into 1.8 m is fine for adults and teenagers. If diving genuinely matters to your household, design for it properly from the first sketch: a 2.4 m pool cannot be retrofitted out of a 1.8 m one.

What an extra 20 cm really costs

Depth drives volume much harder than people expect, because it applies to the whole floor at once. Add 20 cm to an 8 × 4 m pool and you add 6.4 m³ of water — as much as adding half a metre of length, and you get no extra swimming for it.

That water is heated every spring, topped up, treated and filtered all season. As a rough guide a heat pump is sized at about 0.35 kW per cubic metre, so those 6.4 m³ are more than 2 kW of extra machine before you count the hours it runs.

Depth also costs below the waterline. Excavation grows with the volume you remove, walls get taller and want more reinforcement, and past about 1.8 m you start meeting groundwater, rock and the need to shore the sides. The pool that is 30 cm deeper is not 30 cm more expensive — quite often it is a different job.

What the builder will ask, and what to check yourself

Expect three questions. Where is the water table, because a shell sitting below it needs a hydrostatic relief valve in the floor and must never be casually emptied — an empty shell in wet ground can float. What is the soil, because clay swells, sand collapses and rock is priced by the hour. And where does the deep end sit relative to the plant room, since the main drain is at the deepest point and its pipe has to go somewhere.

Check the small dimensions depth quietly sets, too: step risers are comfortable at about 25–30 cm, a bench or ledge sits best 40–45 cm below the surface, and the freeboard — water to coping — is around 15 cm in a skimmer pool and near zero in a deck-level one.

When you tune the shallow and deep numbers in the designer, watch the computed volume move as you drag them. It takes a minute, it is free, and that single number is the one your heating and chemical bills will follow for the next twenty years.

Getting the depths right

  • Decide who uses the pool most, and give them water they can stand in.
  • Use 1.2 m to 1.8 m only if you genuinely want both a play zone and a deep one.
  • Consider a single depth of 1.35–1.4 m if nobody wants a deep end.
  • Keep the slope gentler than 1:3 and run it through the middle third.
  • Put the shallow end and the steps nearest the terrace.
  • Add a 15 cm tanning ledge before you add 20 cm of depth.
  • Design it as a no-diving pool unless you can commit to 2.4 m properly.
  • Ask about the water table and the soil before you fix the deep end.

What goes wrong in practice

  1. A deep end nobody uses

    The 2 m corner of a family pool is where adults rarely go and children may not. It costs volume, heat and chemicals every season. If jumping is the only reason, 1.8 m already does that job feet-first.

  2. The invisible drop-off

    A slope that starts too early or runs too steeply catches children who thought they could stand. Keep the first third flat, slope the middle, and mark the depth change with a tile band or a float line.

  3. Shallow everywhere

    A metre of water sounds family-friendly and is unpleasant to swim in — your knuckles find the floor on every stroke. 1.2 m is the practical minimum for a pool adults will actually use.

  4. Forgetting the ground

    A deep end below the water table needs a hydrostatic valve and careful draining. Find out what is under the lawn before the digger arrives, not after the hole is open.

  5. Depth instead of a ledge

    Families ask for more depth when what they want is more usable shallow water. A tanning ledge and a wide flat shallow end deliver exactly that, for a fraction of the cost and none of the risk.
