Swimming: a lane versus a huddle
An oval keeps a real straight line down its long axis. At a common 8 × 4.5 m size, a comfortable 2 m-wide lane runs for about 7 m before the ellipse's curve closes in — close enough to the full length that you barely notice the ends. A round pool offers nothing like it: whatever line you draw across a circle shortens the instant it drifts off-centre, and even a generous 4.5 m-diameter round only holds a 2 m-wide line for about 4 m, roughly its own diameter and no more, however you turn it.
What the round does instead is put everyone in reach of everyone. There's no shallow-end hierarchy and no deep end to defend — you float, you chat, you cool off, all facing the middle. That's not a lesser use of water, it's a different one: choose the round because you want a social pool, not a smaller swimming pool.
How each sits in the garden
The round is the shape that fits where nothing else does: a leftover triangle of lawn, a walled courtyard, the narrow gap beside a terrace. Because it needs only one dimension — its diameter — it never fights a boundary the way a long oval can; turn it any way you like and it looks the same. That's also why it reads as a garden feature in its own right, closer to a fountain or a sculpture than a swimming pool.

Construction: one radius versus a changing one
A circle has the same radius all the way round, which makes it the simplest curved shape there is to set out and form — some circular-pool systems even use repeating prefabricated wall panels, because every metre of wall is identical to the last. An ellipse's curvature keeps changing as you travel round it: tight at the two ends, gentle along the sides. It's still one continuous curve with no corners to fillet, but every section of formwork and every coping piece is subtly different from its neighbour, which adds setting-out and cutting time a round pool simply doesn't need.
Structurally the circle also has the easiest time of it: a ring resists the even push of water and surrounding ground more uniformly than any other shape, which is part of why round pools have a reputation for being solid, low-drama builds. Covers and cleaning
Neither shape takes a stock rectangular safety cover or an off-the-shelf slatted automatic one; both need a cover cut, or built, to their own curve. Here the round has a practical edge: its shape is fully described by one number, the diameter, so ordering a round safety cover or solar blanket is close to a catalogue lookup. An oval's cover needs a real two-axis pattern — length and width both matter — so it's closer to a custom job, and a slatted automatic cover on an oval is a rarer, pricier undertaking than on almost any other shape.

Water volume is where the two genuinely part ways. Choose the round if the plot is small, oddly shaped, or simply doesn't have 8 m to spare — or if the pool's job was never to be swum in lengths but to be a place to float, cool off and gather.
