Choosing a pool shape: a practical guide

Shape is where taste meets consequences: it changes the swim, the build cost, the cover and how the pool sits in your garden.

Start with what the water is for

Every pool shape is an answer to a question, and the question is what the water is for. If someone in the house will swim lengths, the pool needs a straight lane and a real length. If it is mostly for children, the shallow zone matters more than the deep one. If it is a place to cool off and look at, the outline can be almost anything. Write that order down before you look at a single picture — the pictures are persuasive and the question is easy to forget.

The ten shapes you will see in most catalogues fall into three families. Straight shapes (rectangle, rounded rectangle, Grecian, Roman) put the most swimmable water into a footprint. Curved shapes (oval, round, kidney, figure 8) sit more softly in a garden. Zoned shapes (L-shape, lazy L, and the figure 8 again) split the water into two rooms. Most decisions get simpler once you know which family you are in.

Straight shapes swim better

A rectangle wastes nothing. An 8 × 4 m rectangle gives an 8 m lane and 32 m² of floor, and that footprint is the most-built family pool in Europe for good reason: two adults can swim without negotiating, and the shallow end still has room for a game. A rounded rectangle with 0.5–1 m corner radii keeps the same centre line; it only gives up the corners, which is exactly where debris collected anyway.

Roman and Grecian pools are rectangles in formal dress. The Roman's semicircular ends still leave a full-length lane down the middle — the curves only narrow the sides, which is where the steps go. The Grecian clips the corners at 45°, so it keeps nearly the full floor and adds no curved formwork at all. If you want to swim strokes rather than turns, plan at least 2.5 m of width per lane and 8 m of length; at 10–12 m swimming starts to feel like swimming.

Curved shapes sit better in the garden

In a planted, informal garden a hard rectangle can look like a shipping container of water. Ovals, kidneys and figure 8s hide their true size because the eye never finds a corner to measure from, and they forgive an irregular plot. They also circulate beautifully: with no corners, filtered water rotates around the whole basin and there is nowhere for leaves to camp.

The price is swim length. An oval keeps a genuine lane along its long axis, but a kidney can lose a third of its length to the curves, and a figure 8's waist interrupts any lane at all. A round pool has no lane and does not pretend to — it is the social shape, everyone facing everyone, and it drops into a courtyard where nothing else fits. Keep round pools at 6 m diameter or under; beyond that the circle starts eating garden faster than it adds water.

The rectangle is not the boring choice — it is the shape that gives every other decision, from cover to coping, the easy answer.

Zoned shapes solve family arguments

An L-shape is really two pools sharing water. The long leg holds the lane; the short leg holds the steps, the toddlers and, often, a tanning ledge. A 9 × 6 m L can give a swimmer a 9 m run while a child stands in a 3 × 3 m shallow bay out of the way. The lazy L does the same with an angled junction, which relaxes the outline and suits sloping or irregular plots.

Zoning costs wall. Two legs have more perimeter than one rectangle holding the same water — roughly 15–20 % more — and every extra metre of wall is formwork, waterproofing, tile and coping. The inner corner also needs a return inlet aimed at it, or the water there stalls. If the household has a lap swimmer and small children, it is still the best money you can spend on a shape; a rule that keeps kids out of the lane never works.

Shape decides the cover

The single biggest hidden consequence of shape is the cover. An automatic slatted cover is a rectangle: it rolls out of a bench or pit at one end and runs on two straight rails. On a rectangle or rounded rectangle it fits like a lid. On a Roman, Grecian or oval it either overhangs the curves or needs a custom shape. On a kidney, figure 8 or lazy L, the only options are a textile safety cover cut to shape or a floating solar blanket.

That matters because the cover is the pool's biggest heat saver and its most important safety device. If an automatic cover is on your list, decide that before the shape, not after. The cover pit is cast with the shell; retrofitting one is a major intervention.

What curves actually cost

Every curve is paid for three times. Forming: curved shuttering is cut and braced by hand, where straight panels are simply stacked. Coping: a curved edge needs stones cut to a radius or small-format pieces, where a straight edge takes stock lengths. Interior: mosaic wraps a curve without cutting, but large-format tile — the calm, architectural look — only works on straight walls.

As a rule of thumb, straight walls are the base price, gentle fillets are a mild premium, and true free-form is a genuine premium that shows up as a noticeable share of the shell budget. Cleaning is the exception: a pool robot handles curves well, and it is sharp corners that trap debris, not arcs.

Match the shape to the house before the garden

The house is the permanent thing; planting grows and changes. A modern house with straight lines wants a rectangle, rounded rectangle or Grecian. A classical or Mediterranean house asks for the Roman. Cottage gardens and period houses flatter an oval or a kidney; a courtyard takes a circle. An L-shape earns its cost when it wraps a terrace or a corner of the house.

Orientation matters as much as outline. Run the long axis toward the view or parallel to the house, and put the shallow end nearest the terrace so the most-used water is the most reachable. A narrow plot decides for you: a 2.5–3 m wide rectangle swims well and leaves garden either side, where a curved pool would leave two useless slivers.

Try three outlines on the same footprint

The cheapest experiment is a garden hose and four pegs. Lay out 8 × 4 m on the lawn, then bend the hose into an oval and a kidney of the same length and walk around each. You will feel how much lawn each one leaves, which is often the real decision.

Then do the same in the designer: open the same footprint as a rectangle, a rounded rectangle and an oval, and read the floor area and volume as they change. Finally, ask your builder to quote the rectangle and your curved favourite at the same size. The gap between those two numbers is what the curve costs — and only you can say whether it is worth it.

Before you settle on a shape

  • Decide the pool's first job: swimming, playing, cooling off or looking at.
  • Lay the outline out on the lawn with a hose and pegs, and walk around it.
  • If you want an automatic cover, stay with a rectangle or rounded rectangle.
  • Plan at least 2.5 m of width and 8 m of length if anyone will swim strokes.
  • Put the shallow end nearest the terrace, whatever the shape.
  • Keep a round pool at 6 m diameter or under.
  • Ask for a quote on the same size as a rectangle and as your curved favourite.

What goes wrong in practice

  1. A kidney for a swimmer

    The lane simply is not there; two strokes in, the curve arrives. Someone who swims but still wants softness should look at a Roman pool or an L-shape with a long leg.

  2. Leaving the cover until last

    On a free-form pool that means a custom cover with weeks of lead time and a price nobody enjoys. Decide the cover type and the shape together, and have the pit cast with the shell.

  3. The oversized round pool

    A 7–8 m circle takes 40–50 m² of garden and still cannot be swum in. Above 6 m diameter a rounded rectangle is the better answer.

  4. Curves against the architecture

    A kidney in front of a strict modern house reads as a foreign object — and the pool outlasts any planting. Take the house's lines, and let softness come from finishes and plants.

  5. A magazine shape shrunk onto a small plot

    A 6 m kidney is all curve and barely any water. Small pools want simple outlines: a circle, a rounded rectangle, a plain rectangle.
