This is the first comparison on this site where swimming really does lose something. The rectangle and the oval share a length and, if you like, a width, but the oval is a true ellipse: no straight walls anywhere, one continuous curve from end to end. The honest number to know before you fall for an oval's shape: an ellipse only ever fills about 79% of its bounding box, whatever its length and width happen to be. Swimming: the curve takes a real bite out of the lane

A rectangle gives you the full 8 m, corner to corner, at the full 4 m width. An oval of the same 8 × 4 m box holds about 25.1 m² of water against the rectangle's 32.0 m² — the missing 21% is the geometry of an ellipse, not a design flaw, and it's the same fraction whatever size oval you draw. The water is at its narrowest at the very ends and widest across the middle, so the pool never gives you a corner to push off from.

Swimming a real stroke needs a corridor at least a couple of metres wide, and that's where the oval's shape actually shows up: keep 2 m of straight width and you get about 6.9 m of usable length out of the 8 m long axis, roughly 87%. Drop to a 1.5 m corridor and it recovers to about 7.4 m. Neither is a real loss for a single relaxed swimmer, but two people swimming side by side, or anyone training seriously, will feel the ends narrowing well before they feel it in a rectangle.

How each one sits in the garden

The rectangle wants a straight edge to answer to — a terrace, a house wall, a hedge line — and organizes the garden around its long side. The oval wants the opposite: it looks best when planting reaches the water on at least one side, and the curve is what disguises its true footprint. A modest oval can feel generous in a soft garden in a way a modest rectangle, which shows its exact dimensions at a glance, rarely does.

This is also where the oval earns its place beside period and classical houses, orangeries, walled gardens — settings where a hard rectangle of water can look like it was dropped in from a different building. Set an oval on the same axis as a garden door or a pergola and it reads as intentional; set it at a careless angle and, unlike a rectangle, it has no straight edge to rescue the composition.

Construction: one gentle curve, not a fussy one

An oval's curve is continuous and gentle — a genuine advantage over shapes with tight fillets or an angled octagon, because a smooth, wide curve is actually easier to shutter accurately than a series of short, sharp ones. Block-built pools use bent panels or a facetted wall rendered to the ellipse; sprayed concrete goes straight to a curved template. Either way, every metre of wall is curved, so there's no straight run to fall back on for savings.

The coping is cut piece by piece around the entire perimeter rather than at four corners, and the waterline tile goes on in small formats or mosaic that can follow the bend all the way round — not just at the ends, as with a rounded rectangle or a Roman. Expect a real premium over a plain rectangle, typically in the same broad range as other genuinely curved shapes: worth budgeting in the 15–30% region on the shell and finishes, depending on how the pool is built.

Covers and cleaning

A slatted automatic cover wants straight, parallel walls, and an oval has neither — it needs a custom cover from the start: either an oversized rectangular housing with a lot of overhang at the curve, or a tailored slat pattern cut to the ellipse. A solar blanket is the easier route: cut to shape once, it floats and works exactly as well as it would on a rectangle.

Cleaning is where the oval wins a real point back. It has no corners at all, so nothing collects in a dead spot and the water keeps moving everywhere along the wall. A rectangle's two end corners are exactly where a robot cleaner works hardest and where leaves settle after a windy night; the oval simply doesn't have that problem to solve.

Cost and the long view

The build cost gap is real, mostly for the reasons above: curved formwork, cut-to-shape coping all the way round, and a custom cover. Running costs pull the other way — at 8 × 4 m the oval holds about 37.7 m³ against the rectangle's 48.0 m³, so heating, chemicals and the pump are all sized for meaningfully less water. An oval built to genuinely match a rectangle's swim length ends up larger and closer in volume, and carries the full curve premium besides.

For resale, the rectangle is the neutral choice — it suits whatever the next owner has in mind and takes any cover without a second thought. A well-planted oval beside a period house ages beautifully and rarely looks wrong; the same oval beside a crisp modern extension can look like it belongs to a different decade. Condition and running cost still matter more than outline, but shape is the one thing you can't change after the fact.

Choose the rectangle if… / choose the oval if…

Choose the rectangle if anyone in the house swims real strokes, if you want a standard automatic cover without a custom order, or if the pool sits against a terrace or house wall where straight edges are doing useful work.

Choose the oval if the garden is planted, sloping or informal, if the pool needs to sit beside a period or classical house, or if you'd rather the pool read as a feature of the landscape than a rectangle of water with a fence around it.
