Both of these hold the same swim: an honest, straight lane down the centre line, the full length of the pool. Where they part ways is everything around that line. A rectangle is full width for its entire length — every one of its 8 m is a true 4 m wide slab of water. A Roman keeps a rectangular body in the middle but replaces both short ends with full semicircles, so only the straight, full-width part in the centre — about 4 m of an 8 m pool — is a true rectangle. The rest tapers into the curve.

Swimming: the lane survives, the ends don't

Down the centre line, both are honestly 8 m — the semicircular ends don't shorten the lane a single swimmer uses, because the arc's apex sits square to it and turns exactly like a flat wall would. What the Roman actually costs is width, not length: the true full-width, full-4-m body only runs for about 4 m in the middle of an 8 m pool, against the rectangle's full 8 m. Two people swimming side by side feel that the ends pinch in; a single swimmer doing lengths mostly doesn't.

The area numbers make the trade honest: an 8 × 4 m rectangle holds 32.0 m² of water, the same-size Roman about 28.6 m² — roughly 11% less. Where the Roman gets something back is the shallow end. A Roman staircase set into the semicircle uses the curve's own space rather than eating into the lane, so it intrudes on swimmable water less than a straight staircase does across a rectangle's flat end wall. It's the one place the curve pays for itself in function, not just looks.

How each one sits in the garden

The rectangle is quietly neutral. It doesn't ask the garden or the house to agree with it in any particular style; it simply sits against whatever straight edge is nearby — a terrace, a wall, a hedge — and gets on with being a pool. It's the shape least likely to look wrong in ten years, because it isn't making a strong argument in the first place.

The Roman makes an argument, and it wants an audience. Its two semicircular ends are a big, formal gesture, and they want to be seen head-on — on axis with a terrace door, a pergola, a row of French windows. On a classical or Mediterranean house, set on that axis, it's the single most convincing formal shape on this site: travertine coping, a stone-clad wall, a pair of clipped hedges either side, and the pool looks like it belongs to the architecture rather than just sitting near it. Off-axis, in an informal or strictly modern garden, the same curves can look like they wandered in from a different building.

Construction and formwork

A rectangle is the cheapest thing a pool builder does: straight formwork panels, standard rebar spacing, straight coping runs, corners that are a solved problem. The Roman adds two full semicircular ends — on an 8 × 4 m pool that's about 12.6 m of curved wall to form, where the rectangle needs none at all. Block builders lay the ends as a faceted polygon and render to the radius; sprayed concrete crews shoot to a curved template either way.

The curve is gentle rather than tight, which helps — a wide semicircle is genuinely easier to form per metre than a series of short fillets — but there's a lot of it, and the finishing costs follow: the coping is cut as segments of a circle all the way around both ends, and the waterline tile on the arcs wants mosaic or small format rather than large sheets. If you want the signature Roman staircase, budget it as its own line item — concentric curved treads, each formed individually. Altogether, expect the Roman to sit at a clear, noticeable premium over the rectangle, not a marginal one.

Covers and cleaning

The rectangle takes an automatic slatted cover exactly as designed: a straight run across the width, a roller housed in a straight pit or bench at one end, nothing to explain to the installer. A solar blanket comes off the roll already the right shape.

A Roman can take a slatted cover, but only as a custom job — the slats crossing each semicircle are cut progressively shorter toward the curve, the ends show a visible saw-tooth edge, and the roller still needs a straight housing at one end, usually under a bench, because you can't dig a straight pit into a curved end. Budget a real surcharge and expect a slightly less tidy result than on a rectangle. Cleaning is closer between the two: neither shape has a sharp 90° corner, so debris has nowhere obvious to camp, and a robot manages both without real trouble.

Cost and the long view

Running costs barely separate the two — at typical family depths the Roman holds about 42.8 m³ against the rectangle's 48.0 m³, so it's marginally cheaper to heat and treat, and its perimeter is about 3.4 m shorter. Those differences are real but small next to a good cover or the edge system. Where they genuinely part ways is the build: the Roman's curved ends, cut coping, optional staircase and custom cover add up to a clear premium over the rectangle's straightforward one.

Long term, the rectangle is the safer bet — it suits whatever the next owner's taste turns out to be, and it never looks like it's trying to make a point. The Roman is a committed, formal style: on the right house it's a genuine selling feature, on the wrong one it can read as dated or over-designed. If you're not confident what the house will look like in ten years, that uncertainty is itself an argument for the rectangle.

Choose the rectangle if… / choose the Roman if…

Choose the rectangle if the house is modern or minimal, if you want the simplest and cheapest build available, if an automatic cover needs to be entirely standard, or if every square metre of floor matters more to you than how the ends look.

Choose the Roman if the house is classical or Mediterranean, the garden has a real axis, and you want the pool to have a front rather than four equal sides. If the picture in your head includes a wide, curved staircase flowing out of the shallow end, only the Roman delivers it — put both at 8 × 4 in the designer, switch on Roman steps, and look at each from the terrace end to see whether it earns its premium.
