Swimming and use: exercise equipment or a gathering place

A rectangle is a machine for straight-line swimming. Even a modest 6 × 3 m gives real strokes and a turn; an 8 × 4 m gives two adults room to swim without negotiating. Whatever else it does, a rectangle is organised around that one straight line from wall to wall.

A round pool has no such line. The only path longer than a stride is straight through the centre point, it's only there once, and it only runs in one direction at a time — in practice nobody swims a circle, they stand, float and turn to face each other in it. That's not a shortcoming so much as a different job: a round pool is the social shape, built for cooling off, treading water with a drink in hand, and kids playing in the middle where an adult can reach any of them in two steps.

Decide this one question before anything else: is the pool exercise equipment, or a gathering place? A household that genuinely swims should stop reading here and take the rectangle; a household that mostly wants to cool off and talk should give the round pool a real look.

How each one sits in the garden

A rectangle wants a straight edge to answer to — a terrace, a house wall, a boundary hedge — and it organises the garden's geometry around its long side. It is, visually, infrastructure: intentional, architectural, clearly a built thing.

A round pool fits where nothing else does. It has no long axis forcing an orientation, so it can drop into a tight courtyard, an awkward leftover corner, a gap between existing trees, or a rooftop terrace, and it reads as a single garden object — closer to a fountain or a specimen tree than to a built structure. In a small or irregular garden that's often the deciding advantage before cost ever enters the conversation.

The practical test is simple: measure the clear circle you actually have — diameter plus at least a metre of coping and walking space all round — before falling for a plan drawn at a size your garden can't give it.

Building it: an efficient wall, a small total

A round shell's walls work in compression around a ring rather than bending at right-angled corners the way a rectangle's do — there's no corner for stress to concentrate at, so the load path around a circle is simply more even. That's a genuinely efficient shape for a wall to take, though it rarely translates into a cheaper total, because round pools are almost always small to begin with.

What does cost more is everything curved: coping cut to a radius rather than taken from stock lengths, and an interior finish that either wraps in mosaic or small format, or accepts that large-format tile won't sit flat on a tight curve. It's the same curve premium a kidney or an oval pays, just applied to a much smaller total perimeter.

A rectangle, by contrast, is the shape every builder has poured a hundred times — standard panels, standard rebar spacing, a price that reflects how solved the problem is. Because the two shapes rarely get built at the same size, the fairer comparison isn't total price but price per square metre of water — and on that measure, the round pool's curve costs more, even while its small total keeps the final number modest.

Covers and cleaning

A rectangle takes a stock automatic slatted cover, straight off the rails, and a robot cleaner drives straight lines and finds the walls exactly where it expects them.

Nothing rectangular fits a circle. Solar blankets and safety covers are cut to the round shape, and a true automatic mechanism for a circle is a specialist job that few builders offer and fewer owners actually buy — most round pools are covered manually or go without in season and rely on a fitted winter cover outside it.

Cleaning is where the round pool wins outright: there isn't a single corner anywhere, so nothing eddies, nothing camps in a dead spot, and the whole perimeter stays in the circulation loop on its own. It's the easiest shape on this site to keep clean, full stop.

What pushes a round pool's price per square metre up: curved coping and finish, all the way round, and a bespoke cover if you want one at all. What pulls its total down: it is almost always small — 3 to 4.5 m for a courtyard, 6 m as the practical ceiling — so the heating, chemicals and pump are all sized for a fraction of a rectangle's volume.

The numbers make the point: a 4 m circle at a uniform 1.2 m depth holds around 15 m³; a modest 6 × 3 m family rectangle, tapering from 1.2 to 1.8 m, holds closer to 27 m³ — nearly twice as much to heat and treat. Try to build a round pool big enough to actually swim laps in — 10 m or more across — and that relationship reverses hard: you're now excavating and filling a full circle of that diameter to get one usable line through the middle, which is a very expensive way to buy 10 m of lane.

Living with it: resale and the long view

A round pool is a firm style choice, not a neutral one — it tells the next owner exactly what this garden was for: sitting in a circle, not training. If their household wants the same thing, it reads as a considered, well-placed feature. If they're picturing laps, they'll see a small pool with an odd cover situation and discount it accordingly.

A rectangle carries no such story — it fits almost any household's plans, takes any cover, and looks intentional next to almost any finish. Neither shape is a liability at sale if it's warm, clean and well kept; buyers respond to condition and running cost long before they measure the outline.
