Of every shape decision on this site, this is the smallest one — and it's also the one almost everyone actually makes. Underneath, the two pools are identical: same straight walls, same length, same slope from a shallow end to a deep one. The only place they differ is the last metre of each corner. A rectangle keeps it sharp, two walls meeting at 90°. Swimming: a rounding error, not a real loss
Both pools give you the same swim: an 8 m rectangle and an 8 m rounded rectangle are both 8 m of water down the centre line, wall to wall. The fillet only touches the last metre or so at each end, where you're already turning rather than stroking. At 8 × 4 m a rectangle holds 32.0 m² of water; the rounded version holds about 31.2 m², a loss of roughly 2.5%. That's not a number you'll ever feel in the water — it's smaller than the gap between two tape measures.
Where the rounding actually helps is circulation. A 90° corner is where water sits still — it's the spot a wall inlet has to work hardest to reach, and the spot a leaf settles when the wind drops. A radius corner keeps the current moving all the way round, so debris has fewer places to collect and a robot cleaner has fewer awkward pivots to make. It's a small daily convenience rather than a dramatic one, but it's real.
How each one sits in the garden
A rounded rectangle is the quiet option. Its fillets are small enough that from the terrace you barely read them as curves — the pool just looks a little less hard-edged. That softness works with almost anything: a lawn running up to paving, a mixed planting scheme, a house that isn't making a strong style statement of its own. It's the shape that disappoints the fewest people, which is exactly why it's the most-built one.
A plain rectangle earns its keep when the garden is making a deliberate, disciplined statement — a strict grid of paving, a minimalist house with crisp right angles throughout, a courtyard where every line is meant to be read. Even a metre-wide fillet is a small departure from that language, and in a strongly architectural setting it shows. If the goal is as few curves as possible anywhere on the pool, the rectangle is the correct answer, not a compromise.
Construction and formwork
The fillets are a mild premium, not a big one. Block-built pools lay the corner as a short facetted run and render it round; sprayed concrete is simply shot to a template. On an 8 × 4 pool the four fillets add up to about 6 m of gentle curve in total, and the coping needs four radius-cut pieces where a plain rectangle needs none — the rest of the coping run is dead straight in both.
Here's the detail most people don't expect: rounding the corners actually shortens the pool's total perimeter. Cutting the corner off removes more wall than the curve adds back, so an 8 × 4 rounded rectangle has about 22.4 m of perimeter against the rectangle's 24.0 m — nearly 7% less coping and wall overall, even with four extra radius cuts to make. It's a wash at worst and a small saving at best; the premium is almost entirely in the labour of shaping the curve, not the material.

Covers and cleaning
A plain rectangle is the reference case for every cover maker: a slatted automatic cover spans the width in a straight run, a solar blanket comes off the roll in the right shape already, and the roller sits in a straight pit or bench at one end. Nothing about it needs explaining to a fitter.
A rounded rectangle takes the same standard slatted cover — the only change is a small triangle of slats resting on the coping at each of the four corners, a detail cover makers do routinely at radii around a metre. It's a routine, accepted detail, but it is a small adjustment, not a flush fit: if you want the cover to meet the coping with zero overhang anywhere on the pool, only the plain rectangle gives you that exactly. A solar blanket is trimmed to the curve in minutes either way, and robot cleaners and manual vacuums manage both shapes without any real difference.
Cost and the long view
Build cost sits close together: the fillets add a small premium in labour, largely offset by the shorter perimeter, so the shell difference between the two is minor compared with choices like the edge system or the interior finish. Running costs are close enough to ignore — 46.8 m³ against 48.0 m³ at typical family depths is a rounding error on the heating bill, not a real saving.
For resale, both are safe bets. Buyers respond to a pool that's warm, clean and well kept far more than to a metre of corner radius. If anything the rounded rectangle is the very slightly safer of the two safe choices, because it flatters more house styles than a hard-edged rectangle does — a future owner is less likely to feel that the pool disagrees with their taste.
Choose the rectangle if… / choose the rounded rectangle if…
Choose the plain rectangle if the house and garden are making a genuinely minimalist, strictly rectilinear statement, if an automatic cover needs to sit flush against the coping with no overhang anywhere, or if every last centimetre of floor matters more to you than a softer corner.
Choose the rounded rectangle for everything else — which is most gardens. It's the safer first-timer's shape, the easier one to keep clean at the corners, and it still takes a standard automatic cover without fuss. Put both at 8 × 4 in the designer and swap between them: the corners are the only thing that moves, and most people know within a few seconds which one they actually prefer.
Take the rounded rectangle unless you need an automatic slatted cover to sit perfectly or you're chasing a strictly architectural look. You give up almost no swim length, the corners clean themselves better, and the pool sits more gently in a normal garden.
