Plunge pools: small water, big luxury

What counts as a plunge pool

A plunge pool is built for immersion rather than swimming: up to roughly 13 m² of water, one depth from wall to wall, and no pretence of a lane. In practice that is 3 × 2 m to 5 × 2.5 m as a rectangle, or a circle of 3–4 m. Larger than that and it starts behaving like a compact pool, with a shallow end and a slope. Smaller, and it is a cold tub — a fine thing, but a different product.

The name covers three habits. In summer it is somewhere to cool off between spells of sun, thirty seconds at a time. In spring and autumn, held at 30 °C and covered at night, it is an outdoor bath you use after dark. In winter at 10–15 °C it is a cold plunge. Most owners end up doing two of the three, and which two you plan for changes the equipment far more than the shape does.

It is not a cheap way to get a pool

Per square metre, a plunge pool is the most expensive water in the garden. The plant room, the excavation, the electrician, the pipe runs and the paperwork cost much the same whether the shell holds 10 m³ or 50 m³, so half the size is not half the bill. Expect around half to two thirds of a family pool's price, not a fifth of it.

The win comes afterwards. The water you heat, treat, cover and top up is a quarter of a family pool's, every month, for twenty years. That is a trade worth making on purpose. Ask for the quote split into groundworks, shell, plant and finishes, and you will see exactly where the money goes.

Size it around bodies, not lengths

The useful unit is a seated adult: about 60 cm of bench each, with 70–80 cm of water in front of their knees. That gives 2.5 × 2 m for two people, 3 × 2.5 m for three or four, and 4 × 2.5 m for four with room to move past one another and a corner to stand in. Past 5 m of length you are buying water for a swim the pool still cannot give you.

Width does more work than length here. At 2 m, two people sitting opposite share the same legroom; at 2.5 m they do not. A circle seats people better than a rectangle because nobody is stuck in a corner, and 3.5 m is the diameter where it stops feeling like a barrel. Mark the outline on the ground and put two garden chairs inside it — a crude test that is never wrong.

You pay nearly a full pool's build price for a quarter of the water — and get back a pool that is actually warm the week you want to use it.

One depth, and a bench along one wall

Keep the floor flat. Across four metres a slope only turns half the floor into somewhere you cannot stand comfortably. A single depth between 1.2 and 1.4 m covers every use: at 1.2 m most adults stand with their shoulders dry, at 1.4 m the water is at the chin and you can push off and float. Take the lower end if children will use it, the upper end if it doubles as a cold plunge.

Then give some of that depth back as a bench. A seat 40–45 cm below the water line and 45–50 cm deep, running the length of one wall, is the most-used square metre in any plunge pool — sitting is the activity here, not a rest from it. It is also the last step on the way in — and two or three corner steps beat a ladder, which in a pool this size takes up a third of a wall and looks like equipment.

Small volume is a superpower, with one catch

A 4 × 2.5 m pool at 1.3 m holds about 13 m³; an 8 × 4 m family pool holds close to 50. Everything that follows volume divides by four: chemical use, heat pump size, warm-up time, the water bill. A modest 5–6 kW heat pump lifts 10 m³ by roughly a degree every two hours, so a pool sitting at 20 °C in the evening is at 30 °C by breakfast.

The catch is that heat leaves through the surface, not the volume, and a small pool has a lot of surface for its water. Uncovered, a plunge pool at 32 °C cools almost as fast as it heated. On a family pool the cover is the best-value accessory; on a plunge pool it is part of the machine.

Chemistry swings just as fast: a dose measured for a normal pool pushes the pH of 13 m³ straight past where you aimed. Halve everything, test twice as often as feels reasonable, and let a salt cell or a doser hold the line — on a small volume, steady beats corrective.

Hot, cold, or both

Warm is the easy case. At 32–34 °C under a slatted cover a plunge pool is a spa without the plastic, and genuinely usable in October and March. Above 30 °C, watch the sanitiser: warm water burns through chlorine faster and grows algae faster, so run the filtration longer as the temperature rises, not shorter.

Cold is a different machine. Bringing 13 m³ down to 10–12 °C in July needs a chiller, or a heat pump that runs in reverse. It will be the noisiest thing on the plot, and the pool wants shade and a cover for the opposite reason to usual — it is fighting the sun all day. Switching between the two is a seasonal decision, not a weekend one: twenty degrees of change takes two or three days.

Design it like a jewel

Small surfaces make good finishes affordable. Full porcelain or glass mosaic over 30 m² of wetted surface costs about what the waterline band alone costs on a family pool — and it is read from a metre away, which is how a plunge pool is always seen. The edge works the same way: a deck-level overflow slot around a 4 × 2.5 m pool is 13 m of channel, against 24 m on an 8 × 4 m pool — the strongest detail in pool design, at its cheapest.

Light it with one warm fitting, set low on the wall opposite the bench so it grazes the tile instead of facing you; two lights in a pool this size only find each other's glare. Open a plunge plan in the designer — a 4 × 2.5 m rectangle or a 3.5 m circle — set a single depth of 1.3 m and switch the edge to deck-level. The plan view is how you will mostly see this pool, and the volume it reports is what you will be heating.

Where it goes, and how it is built

A plunge pool fits a courtyard, a side return or the corner of a terrace — which is also its risk, because pressed flat against a wall it reads as a trough. Leave a metre of deck on the side people step onto, keep something solid behind the bench to lean against, and check the access route before you fall in love with a spot: a one-piece shell needs a crane position, a concrete one a digger and somewhere to put the spoil.

All three shell types work at this size. A moulded composite shell is craned in and running within days, with the bench built in and the shapes fixed to the maker's catalogue. A tiled concrete shell takes weeks and costs more, and puts the bench, the steps and the finish exactly where you want them. A panel shell with a liner sits between the two. Since the fixed costs dominate anyway, decide on the finish you will look at, not the price of the shell.

Before you build a plunge pool

  • Decide which months you want it warm, and size the heat pump for the coldest of them.
  • Keep the floor flat, at one depth between 1.2 and 1.4 m.
  • Run a bench along one wall, 40–45 cm below the water line.
  • Order the cover with the pool — small water loses heat fast.
  • Get the quote split into groundworks, plant, shell and finishes.
  • Check the crane or digger route before you fix the spot.
  • Leave a metre of deck on the side you will step onto.
  • Halve every chemical dose printed on the packet.

What goes wrong in practice

  1. Sizing it from a photograph

    Renders flatter small pools, and 2 × 2 m looks generous until two adults sit in it. Count seated bodies at 60 cm each, add the legroom, then check the number against two chairs on the lawn.

  2. Expecting it to be cheap

    Groundworks, plant and connections barely shrink with the shell. Budget a small pool with a normal pool's plant room; the savings arrive monthly, not on the invoice.

  3. A sloping floor

    A slope inherited from a family-pool drawing wastes half of a four-metre floor. Ask for one level slab — cheaper to dig, cheaper to tile and safer with children.

  4. Treating the cover as an accessory

    With this much surface per cubic metre, an uncovered plunge pool at 32 °C is a running bill with a puddle attached. The cover is what turns the small volume into an advantage instead of a liability.

  5. Dosing it like a big pool

    One scoop meant for 50 m³ takes 13 m³ somewhere you never intended, and the fix is another dose. Small volumes want small, frequent, boring interventions.

How small can a plunge pool be?

Can a plunge pool be heated like a spa?
Yes. The small volume makes 32–34 °C affordable in a way it never is on a family pool. Pair it with a rigid cover and run the filtration longer as the water gets warmer.
How long does it take to heat up?
With a 5–6 kW heat pump, roughly two hours per degree on 10 m³. Overnight takes a summer pool from 20 °C to a comfortable 30 °C; a cold start in spring takes two or three days.
Can I use it as a cold plunge?
Yes, but cooling is active work: below roughly 15 °C in summer you need a chiller or a reversible heat pump. Shade and a cover matter as much as they do for heating, for the same reason.
Do I need a counter-current to swim in it?
If you want to swim, yes — and at that point you are specifying a swim spa rather than a plunge pool. Decide which one you are building before the shell is ordered, because the plumbing differs.
Does a plunge pool add value to a house?
In a small urban garden it often reads better than a large pool would, because it adds a feature without consuming the outdoor space. As with any pool, condition and running costs matter more to a buyer than size.
