If you have ruled out a hard-edged rectangle but still want a pool you can properly swim in, you end up looking at these two. Both are rectangles at heart: same long axis, same honest lane down the middle, same shallow-to-deep slope along the length. The difference is where the curve goes. The rounded rectangle files a soft radius onto all four corners and leaves every wall straight. The Roman keeps its long walls dead straight and replaces the two short ends with full semicircles.

What does not differ: swim length, depth options, water volume within a few percent, filtration, heating. What does: how the pool reads from the house, what happens at each end, how the coping and the cover are made, and a noticeable step in formwork. This is mostly a style decision with a construction bill attached, and it is worth understanding both halves before you commit.

Swimming: the same lane, different ends

Both keep the full length along the centre line: an 8 m pool is 8 m of swimming in either. The difference is in the last two metres at each end. In a rounded rectangle the walls stay parallel until roughly a metre from the corner; you can swim two abreast, turn against a flat wall and push off cleanly. In a Roman the end is a semicircle with a radius of half the width — on a 4 m wide pool that is a 2 m radius, so the full-width part of an 8 m pool is only 4 m long. A 2 m wide straight lane fits 7.4 m of the Roman's 8 m; in the rounded rectangle it fits all 8.

In practice a single swimmer does not notice. The apex of the arc is square to the lane and is a perfectly good wall to turn on. Two swimmers notice a little: the arc squeezes them together at the ends. Where the Roman genuinely changes the swim is the shallow end. A staircase set into the semicircle uses the end's own space rather than the lane's, so it intrudes less into swimmable water than straight steps across a rounded rectangle's end wall.

How each sits in the garden

The rounded rectangle is quiet. Its four fillets are small — about a quarter of the width, so roughly 1 m on a 4 m pool — and from a terrace you barely read them as curves; the pool simply looks less hard. It sits equally well beside a modern box and a rendered farmhouse, which is why it is the designer's default and the most-built softened shape. It follows a lawn edge or a paving grid without asking anything of either.

The Roman has a face. The two semicircles are big gestures — a full half-circle of 2 m radius each — and they want to be seen head-on: on axis with a terrace door, a pergola, a row of French windows. Put a Roman pool at an angle in an informal garden and its ends look lost. Put it on an axis with a house of matching temperament — classical, Mediterranean, anything symmetric — and it is the strongest of the softened shapes. Travertine coping, a stone-clad wall behind the deep end, a pair of cypresses: the shape carries formality by itself.

Construction and formwork

The rounded rectangle is a mild premium over a plain rectangle: four short fillets of about 1.5 m of curved wall each, roughly 6 m of curve in total on an 8 × 4. With block walls the fillet is built as a facetted corner and rendered round; with sprayed concrete it is simply sprayed to a template. Coping needs four radius-cut pieces and the rest is straight. Tiling stays large format on the walls, with a few cut pieces or a strip of mosaic in each corner.

The Roman roughly doubles the curved wall — two semicircles of 2 m radius are 12.6 m of curve on the same pool — but it is gentle curve, which is easier per metre than a tight fillet. Block builders lay the ends as a polygon and render to the radius; shotcrete crews do not care either way. What costs is the finishing: the coping is cut as segments of a 2 m circle all the way round both ends, and the tile on the arcs is either mosaic or small format. The Roman staircase, if you want the signature, is its own line: concentric curved treads formed one at a time. Budget the Roman as a clear premium and the rounded rectangle as a small one.

Covers and cleaning

To a cover maker a rounded rectangle is effectively a rectangle. A slatted automatic cover spans the width, and at the four corners a small triangle of slats rests over the coping — a common, accepted detail at radii of about a metre. A solar blanket is trimmed to shape in five minutes. The roller's housing is a straight pit or bench at one end, exactly as on a rectangle.

A Roman can take a slatted cover, but it is a custom job: the slats crossing each semicircle are cut progressively shorter, the ends show a saw-tooth edge, and the roller still needs a straight housing — usually under a bench or above deck at one end, because you cannot dig a straight pit in a curved end. Expect a meaningful surcharge and a slightly less tidy look. Cleaning is a wash: neither shape has a sharp corner for debris to settle in, and robots handle both without trouble.

Cost, running cost and long-term value

Running costs are almost identical. At the same 8 × 4 footprint and 1.2–1.8 m depths the Roman holds about 42 m³ against the rounded rectangle's 46 m³, so it is marginally cheaper to heat and treat, and its perimeter is 2 m shorter. Those are rounding errors next to a good cover. The build is where they part: the Roman's ends, coping, staircase and custom cover together add a noticeable premium on top of the rounded rectangle's small one.

Long term, the rounded rectangle is the safer bet: it goes with whatever house the next owner has in mind. The Roman is a committed style — on the right house a selling point, on the wrong one a renovation. If you are unsure what the house will look like in ten years, the rounded rectangle is the answer to that uncertainty.

Choose the rounded rectangle if… / choose the Roman if…

Choose the rounded rectangle if you want a pool that swims like a rectangle, disappears into a normal garden, takes an automatic cover without fuss and keeps the budget close to a plain rectangle. It is the right call for first-time owners, for gardens that mix lawn and paving, and for anyone who would rather spend the curve budget on a heat pump or a tanning ledge.

Choose the Roman if the house is classical or Mediterranean, the garden has an axis, and you want the pool to have a front. If a wide, curved staircase flowing out of the shallow end is the picture in your head, only the Roman delivers it. Put both at 8 × 4 in the designer, switch on Roman steps, and look at each from the terrace end — the choice usually makes itself.
